Benefits received from hearing aids, or amplification devices can be enhanced by an auditory rehabilitation program. Auditory rehab helps patients learn skills to optimize their hearing ability. The average person has been having trouble hearing for 7 to 10 years before they decide to pursue treatment for it. During that time period, you brain may experience significant sensory loss, negatively affecting clarity and speech understanding. Once amplification is utilized, it may require an amount of “re-learning” to understand speech in noise.
This is where auditory rehabilitation comes in. Inherently, amplification provides a huge benefit to hearing aid users, but additional training to enhance listening abilities may be needed. Aural rehabilitation plan of care includes counseling, environmental modifications at home or work, and auditory and communication skills training. If needed, we can also help advocate for your communication needs at your employment.
